IDEA Fundamentals is designed for leaders of organizations who want to explore and deepen their understanding of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) in the workplace. This training focuses on key concepts, terminology, and strategies for leaders to be able to create diverse and welcoming workplaces. This course is based in a Nova Scotian context, focusing on inclusion strategies for persons with disabilities, persons who identify as 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous Peoples and Mi’kmaq, and Black and African Nova Scotians.

** The pre-requisite for this program is completion of either Communication Skills for Leaders, or HR Essentials.

At the end of the program participants will be able to:

• Confidently use IDEA language and terminology
• Appreciate how cultural differences can show up in the workplace and how to detect and address behaviours that may occur as a result
• Identify and manage the effects of one’s unconscious biases as an organizational leader
• Understand your rights and duties as a Nova Scotian employer and/or leader of an organization using an IDEA lens
• Recognize when accommodation plans are needed and how to develop them for staff
• Apply strategies and identify steps to improve one’s own intercultural competence
• Determine how challenges and opportunities experienced by Nova Scotian equity-deserving communities affect recruitment and retention efforts
• Realize how power and privilege play out in the workplace
• Implement strategies to create safe and respectful workspaces and instill a sense of belonging for an organization’s workforce.

Standard topics will include:

  • Diversity and Inclusion Immersion
  • Introduction to Cultural Competence
  • Respect in the Workplace
  • Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities
  • Accommodations in the Workplace
  • 2SLGBTQ+ and Gender Inclusion
  • Indigenous and Mi'kmaq Inclusion
  • Race and racism
  • Creating a culture of belonging

Start Date: Monday, April 15, 2024

Time:  8:30am - 12:30pm

Classes will run every Monday for 10 consecutive weeks except for Victoria Day, May 20.  There are additional requirements for the Zoom online programs, as follows: The program must be taken on a computer, laptop, or tablet; phones will not be an accepted device. Participants must have a high speed Internet connection (no dial up), and hardwired is preferred to wi-fi. A headset or earbuds must be used, and the participant must have a webcam, if no camera in their laptop, with the camera left on; video participation is a requirement, to ensure the connection to the instructor and other participants. A quiet place to focus is required, free from distractions. These details will be part of the INA process.

Registration is not confirmation of acceptance in the program; you will be contacted as to your status after an individual needs assessment, and no later than April 12, 2024.

TESTIMONIALS

My name is Jean and my business is Jeanious Design.
I have taken several of the courses offered by CBDC and I feel they have helped me crack out of the shell I was in.
Nervous to approach people, nervous to put myself out there in the business world and succeed or fail.
Being in class with other fresh and seasoned business people and seeing that I was not alone in my quest for business knowledge, helped me a lot.
I still have along way to go but every day that goes by I become more confident with my learning and business approach.
I am looking forward to the new classes!
Jean Pearcey
