I started my career working for the Government of Canada in the Halifax/Dartmouth region. When my husband’s job brought us to Pictou County, I took some time off to raise my family.
When I went back to work it was for the Empire/Sobeys group of companies and after that I worked for an engineering firm in Pictou, which is where I was introduced to Simply Accounting (now known as Sage 50). Due to downsizing of that firm, I struck out on my own and took advantage of the Self-Employment Benefits program offered through CBCD/NOBL. I started offering part-time bookkeeping assistance to various firms in the Pictou County region and later that expanded to include teaching new businesses to set up and maintain their own bookkeeping records. It has now (2017) been thirteen years since I started Lighthouse Bookkeeping Services and I enjoy meeting all the different people and businesses that have crossed my path during that time.

About Edna Tobey
Being in the industry I am, I have been aware of the SEB program for many years. As a participant, I was surprised at the number of ways the program impacted my business. Everyone I dealt with from the beginnings of an idea to final approval were helpful and supportive. The professional presenters on topics ranging from marketing to financial issues to insurance were very informative and often were able to put things in the context of my business problems and concerns. The most surprising to me though was the benefit received from brainstorming with other business owners about issues we were all facing in trying to grow our business and the realization that we had a network of support.
